This is for our fellow Toastmaster, Avniel Serkin Ahmed. I grew up with Avniel. We went to elementary school together and have kept in touch all these years. I am heartbroken by his tragic, shocking passing at the age of 41.
Avniel was kind, gentle, and brilliant. He loved food, discussing politics, and the Commanders. On Facebook, he founded and facilitated a group that encouraged peaceful discourse and discussions among people with different political views.
As recently as October, he was arrested for standing up for someone who was less fortunate. That was Avniel. He was a friend to the marginalized and a voice for those who lacked a voice of their own. He was a person of faith and lived his beliefs each and every day.
While Avniel avoided the spotlight, recognition or attention, his service in Toastmasters enabled him to develop and strengthen that voice. He will be so tremendously missed by everyone who knew him and had the joy of having him in their lives.
Avniel is survived by his mom and younger sister of Silver Spring. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter.
